George III Silver Serving Spoon-Smith & Fearn-1793

This is a high quality George III Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoon was made in London by George Smith & William Fearn and dates to 1793. Smith & Fearn were members of a group of four families: Chawner, Smith, Eley & Fearn, who dominated flatware production in London from the late 18th century until well into the 19th century. The families were linked by partnerships, marriages and apprenticeships and all produced spoons and flatware of the very best quality.
This serving spoon is a well made in a good gauge of silver. It has an initial "H" elegantly engraved at the top of the stem and more unusually it has the name of the London retailer Hawkes of Long Acre stamped on the underside of the stem. This would be a great addition for any collector of Georgian spoons.
Condition is very good with just the minimal wear that has to be expected in a spoon that has seen over 225 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 22.5cm / 8.75" long and weighs in at a substantial 63.3g / 2.23oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark, which nevertheless remains easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "s" for 1793, the George III duty mark and the GS over WF makers' mark for George Smith & William Fearn.
