George III Silver Serving Spoon, London, 1812

This is an absolutely top quality George III Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The Serving Spoon is made in London in a very good gauge of silver by silversmiths Eley, Fearn & Chawner and dates to 1812. The "three Williams," William Eley, William Fearn & William Chawner were members of interlinked families of specialist spoon makers who were connected by apprenticeships, partnerships and marriages. Between them they dominated spoon making in London from the late 18th century and through most of the 19th century with Chawner & Co becoming the most famous of the family businesses. If you see any of these names on flatware you know you are buying a quality piece.
The top of the stem has some elegantly engraved initials which are now very rubbed but most probably read "JS".
The Serving Spoon is in very good condition with only the superficial wear & tear you would expect of an item that is now 208 years old! It is perfectly usable on a dining table today or would make a good addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos as these form part of the description.
The spoon is 22.0cm long and weighs a substantial 63.1g of solid sterling silver.
The hallmarks at the top of the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "R" for 1812, the George III duty mark and the WE, WF, WC makers' mark for William Eley, William Fearn & William Chawner.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs before making a purchase.
