George III Silver Shell Teaspoon, London, 1796

This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Shell Teaspoon in the classic Old English pattern. The stem is in the traditional plain Old English style whilst the bowl is shell shaped. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teaspoon is made in London by silversmiths George Smith and Thomas Hayter and dates to 1796. George Smith registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1771. He was principally a spoon maker but other pieces by him are known. In 1791 he was joined in partnership by his son-in-law Thomas Hayter and they continued together until George's death in 1804 after which Thomas continued the business until around 1815, when he was joined by his son George Hayter and they were partners for a further 10 years.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 225 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs in at 11.9g / 0.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear, with just the makers' mark being somewhat rubbed but still decipherable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter A for 1796, the George III duty mark and the GS over TH makers' mark for George Smith & Thomas Hayter.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
