George III Silver Sugar Tongs, John Fisher, 1800
This is a good pair of George III Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the Fiddle & Thread pattern, although unusually it doesn't have shoulders above the two bowls. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tongs are made in London by John Fisher and date to 1800. John Fisher registered his mark in early 1799, so date letter C for 1798, and described himself as a smallworker, a term often used by specialist spoon and flatware makers who also produced a few other small items of silverware.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just a slight kink in one arm, which could be straightened out with care, plus the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after over 220 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 13.9cm / 5.5ins long and weigh in at a very respectable 29.5g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the arms are clear to read, with just the makers' mark being somewhat rubbed but still decipherable. On one arm are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter E for 1800 and the George III duty mark. On the other is the I.F makers' mark for John Fisher.
