George III Silver Table Spoon-A. & G. Burrows-1807
Here we have a good quality George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has the initials GHM elegantly engraved at the top of the stem. It is perfectly usable today or would make a good addition to an existing service or collection.
The spoon, a well made item in a good gauge of silver, is by Alice & George Burrows (II) of London and dates to 1807. Alice Burrows was the wife of silversmith George Burrows (I), who was active from 1769 until his death in 1801. At that point Alice took over the running of the business in partnership with their son George (II) and carried on until her own death in 1819.
Condition of the spoon is very good with one miniscule pinprick ding in the bowl and just the superficial wear that has to be expected after over 210 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 20.8cm / 8.1ins long and weighs a substantial 55.1g / 1.94oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read, with the exception of the makers' mark which has one corner somewhat rubbed away but is still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter M for 1807, the George III duty mark and the A.B over G.B makers' mark for Alice & George Burrows (II).
