George III Silver Table Spoon, J.H, Exeter, 1787

Here we have a fine George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon. The spoon is in the classic Old English pattern enhanced with Bright Cut decoration down the front of the stem. The initials T E M and the date 1790 are engraved in the cartouche at the top of the stem, suggesting this was probably originally given as a Christening gift.
The table spoon was made in Exeter by silversmith Joseph Hicks and dates to 1787, with the initials and date added a little later in 1790 and the bright cut decoration probably added in the 19th century. Joseph Hicks was a specialist spoon maker who was active in Exeter between around 1780 and 1835. Although his principal output was spoons and flatware his mark does occasionally show up on other items although these are very rare.
Condition is good, with just a little rounding to the tip and the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 235 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 21.3cm / 8.4ins long and weighs in at a respectable 52.6g / 1.85oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter O for 1787, the George III duty mark and the script J H makers' mark for Joseph Hicks.
