George III Silver Taper Chamberstick, London, 1802

Here we have a delightful George III Sterling Silver Taper Chamberstick with its original Snuffer. The chamberstick is circular with a rim base, a round line decorated handle, a cylindrical sconce and a removable nozzle. The snuffer is conical, fits into a holder on the handle and is attached to the sconce by a short chain.
The chamberstick was made in London by Thomas Radcliffe Snr and dates to 1802. Thomas Radcliffe Snr was a specialist in candlesticks and snuffers working from the late 18th century into the early 19th century. He was succeeded by his son Thomas Radcliffe Jnr who registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1812. He carried on his father’s business up until around 1830.
Condition is good, with just a slight flattening to the rim below the base and around the top of the sconce plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 220 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 7cm / 2.75ins from rim to handle, 5.4cm / 2.1ins in diameter across the base and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 43.5g / 1.53oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the bottom rim of the chamberstick and with a matching set on the snuffer, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter G for 1802, the George III duty mark and the T.R makers' mark for Thomas Radcliffe Snr.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
