George III York Silver Dessert Spoon, 1818

This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Dessert Spoon in the traditional fiddle pattern. The spoon is made in York by Edward Jackson and dates to 1818. Edward Jackson was a specialist spoon maker who worked in the city of York between 1815 and 1840 for certain and may have had a longer career either side of those dates. His premises in 1840 were at No.14 Coney Street, which remains one of the principal shopping streets in York to this day.
The York assay office has a very long history being originally established by Act of Parliament in 1423. It was a re-established along with a number of other provincial offices by a further Act in 1701 but only lasted until 1716 before reopening around 1776 and then finally closing in 1858. Unusually the York City Arms assay mark was generally omitted from the hallmarks with the London leopard's head being included instead. York hallmarks are comparatively rare and much sought after by collectors.
This dessert spoon is in the traditional fiddle pattern and has the initials "GJA" elegantly engraved at the top of the stem. It is 17.5cm / 6.8" long and weighs 37.7g / 1.33oz.
The spoon has been used but remains in good condition with just the wear you would expect after over 200 years of use. There is a very slight ding at the top of the bowl near to where it joins the stem. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London leopard's head assay mark, which was generally used in York, the York date letter "g", the George III duty mark and the EJ makers' mark for Edward Jackson.
