George IV Exeter Silver Dessert Fork, 1827

This is a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Dessert Fork in the classic Fiddle pattern. The fork is made in Exeter by Simon Levy and dates to 1827. Simon Levy was active in Exeter from 1817 to around 1830 by which time his business was obviously struggling as he was declared bankrupt in 1832. He principally made flatware but his mark has also been found on a silver teapot. It is quite a rare makers' mark and the fork will be a good addition to an Exeter silver collection.
Exeter has a long history of assaying silver going back into the 16th century but the assay office was formally established by Act of Parliament in 1701, some 70 years before Birmingham and Sheffield got their assay offices. Exeter was the principal assay office for silversmiths and goldsmiths across the whole of south-west England but as manufacturing became concentrated further north the work dried up and the office closed in 1882. Because of its comparative rarity, Exeter silver has become highly collectable.
The fork is in good condition with just some wear to the right hand tine of the fork, which is often the case with forks that have been regularly used for a long period of time. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The fork is 16.5cm long and weighs a very respectable 41.5g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter "l" for 1827, the George IV duty mark and the SL makers' mark for Simon Levy.
