George IV Irish Silver Spice Ladle, Thomas Farnett
This is a superb quality heavyweight George IV Irish Sterling Silver Spice Ladle in the elegant Queen's pattern. A variation on the more common King's pattern, Queen's has a distinctive flower or rosette where the hourglass finial joins the stem. This spice ladle has a crest of a tree inside a belt or garter with a motto, which sadly we cannot make out. A letter F is elegantly engraved on the underside.
Spice ladles were primarily produced in the late 18th and early 19th century and were used for spooning the likes of cinnamon, cayenne or mustard powder onto food at the table.
This spice ladle is a very well made item in a heavy gauge of silver. It is from Dublin, dated 1829 and was made by Thomas Farnett. Farnett was a specialist spoon maker who was active between around 1810 and 1835 and was clearly a very accomplished silversmith.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 190 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spice ladle is 12.6cm / 4.9ins long and weighs in at a very substantial 29.1g / 1.02oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are slightly distorted by the thread patterning but still clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the George IV duty mark, the date letter I for 1829 and the TF makers' mark for Thomas Farnett.
