George IV Scottish Silver Serving Spoon, 1823
This is a very high quality Scottish George IV Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The Serving Spoon is made in Edinburgh in a very good gauge of silver by silversmith William Marshall and dates to 1823. William Marshall was an Edinburgh silversmith who was in business throughout the 19th century, latterly as William Marshall & Son. They are best known for their very good quality flatware but also made other items of tableware.
There is a crest of an Eagle or possibly a Phoenix elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The Serving Spoon is in very good condition with only the superficial wear & tear you would expect of an item that is nearly 200 years old. It is perfectly usable on a dining table today or would make a good addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The spoon is 22.1cm long and weighs a very substantial 72.6g of solid sterling silver.
The hallmarks at the top of the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They are the thistle for Scottish Sterling Silver, the three towered castle assay mark for Edinburgh, the date letter "r" for 1823, the George IV duty mark and both large and small versions of the distinctive WM under a crown makers' mark for William Marshall.
