George IV Silver Decanter Label, C. Rawlings, 1826 George IV Georgian Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an attractive George IV Sterling Silver Decanter Label for Sherry. The label is shaped as a vine leaf with the word SHERRY cut out across the middle and is suspended by a chain.

The decanter label was made in London by silversmith Charles Rawlings and dates to 1826. Charles Rawlings registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1817. He made a variety of items but his mark is most often seen on decanter labels and jar lids. He remained in business until around 1830.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 195 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The decanter label is 5.5cm / 2.1ins across and 10cm / 3.9ins from the top of the chain to the bottom of the label. It weighs in at 11.0g / 0.39oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the bottom left at the front, are well struck but have been partly cut away by the letter s of sherry being cut into the label. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the George IV duty mark and the C R makers' mark for Charles Rawlings. You can see the top of the date letter l for 1826 but the leopard's head assay mark for London has been completely cut away.
