George IV Silver Salt Spoon, Robert Rutland, 1823 George IV Georgian 1820s %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a boar's head crest engraved at the top of the stem, a device used by many English noble families.

The salt spoon was made in London by silversmith Robert Rutland and dates to 1823. Robert Rutland was a specialist spoon and flatware maker who registered his first mark at London’s Goldsmiths Hall in 1807. He produced consistently good quality pieces and remained in business into the late 1820s.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long and weighs in at a respectable 14.9g / 0.52oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1823, the George IV duty mark and the R R makers' mark for Robert Rutland.
