George IV Silver Topped Glass Box, J Thropp, 1824

This is a very high quality George IV Glass Box with a Sterling Silver Lid. The rectangular box is handblown in very heavy glass. The silver lid has line decoration around the sides and a pierced neo-classical design on the top surrounding a blank cartouche.
The box was made in Birmingham by silversmith John Thropp and dates to 1824. John Thropp registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1808 and operated from premises in King Edward’s Place. He made a range of spoons and flatware, decanter labels, boxes and lids, vinaigrettes and tableware. He remained in business up until around 1830.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 17.2cm / 6.8ins long, 4.8cm / 1.9ins wide and 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 64.6g / 2.3oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the box weighs 572g / 20.2oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1824, the George III duty mark (Birmingham didn't introduce the George IV duty mark until 1828/9) and the I T in an oval makers' mark for John Thropp.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
