George V Butter Dish & Spreader Docker & Burn 1929

This is a charming Cased George V Cut Glass Butter Dish with accompanying Sterling Silver Butter Knife or Spreader. The butter dish is oblong with star cut decoration around the sides and an apple, pear and foliage design cut into the base. The spreader is in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The black leather covered box has a tooled gold border on the lid, with cream satin lining and a fitted black velvet tray.
The set was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Docker & Burn and dates to 1929. Docker & Burn registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1920 and primarily produced silver tableware and flatware throughout the 1920s. They ceased trading around 1930, probably victims of the economic crash of the period.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass dish, no dings or dents in the silver spreader and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The outside of the box has some slight scuffing but is in overall good condition with both hinges and clasp in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cut glass dish measures 9.8cm / 3.8ins by 7.4cm / 2.9ins and the butter knife is 11.1cm / 4.4ins long. By itself, the spreader weighs in at 11.9g / 0.42oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the set weighs 145.1g / 5.1oz unboxed.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the spreader, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the D & B makers' mark for Docker & Burn.
