George V Engraved Glass Bowl with Silver Lid, 1930

Here we have a beautiful large George V Engraved Glass Bowl with a Sterling Silver Lid. The bowl has a circular spreading foot. The body tapers outwards to the shoulders and then in to a circular room. It is decorated with an elegant engraved floral design with deep cut arches between each spray of flowers. The silver lid is plain with a flat topped handle and is gilded on the inside.
This was probably used on a dressing table to hold large items or possibly cotton wool. It is a versatile storage piece that could be put to multiple uses today.
The bowl was made in London by highly regarded silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1930. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the lid and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is of substantial size, measuring 14.3cm / 5.6ins in diameter and standing 13.5cm / 5.3ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at 118.2g / 4.17oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the bowl weighs 833g / 29.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter p for 1930 and the R C makers' mark for Richard Comyns of William Comyns & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £16.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl and the weight.
