George V Masonic Silver Bonbon Dish, 1929
Here we have a good quality George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish styled as a mini comport. The dish has the Masonic emblem of the Square and Compasses neatly engraved in the centre. The pierced bowl of the dish is on a pedestal stem and the base is weighted for stability with a green baize cover on the underside. It is unusual for a bonbon dish to have a weighted base so it may originally have been intended to hold something heavier than sweets.
The bonbon dish is made in Birmingham by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd and dates to 1929. Originally established in Bristol in 1826 by Abraham Solomon Blanckensee, the firm almost immediately transferred to Birmingham and remained in business up until the start of the Second World War.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced decoration and just the superficial surface wear that would expect in an item of this age. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 7.2cm / 2.8ins high and 9.8cm / 3.8ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs 75.2g / 2.6oz but this does of course include the weighting material.
The hallmarks on the side of the dish are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the S.B & S. Ld makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd.
