George V Promotional Cheroot Holder, B'ham, 1915

This is an interesting George V Sterling Silver Mounted Promotional Cheroot Holder. The holder is made from bakelite and stamped Crumpsall Cream Crackers. It has a plain Sterling Silver rim. The cheroot holder was made by C.F. Silversmiths in Birmingham and dates to 1915.
The Crumpsall biscuit factory just outside Manchester was owned and run by the Co-Operative Wholesale Society (CWS), an ancestor of today's Co-Op. They produced many promotional items, particularly for their cream crackers, nearly all of which were associated with smoking such as ashtrays, matchboxes and matchbooks, cigarette boxes and this cheroot holder. Most were cheaply made but an item like this with a silver collar must have been a much higher end promotional gift for particularly good customers.
Whilst the cheroot holder has definitely seen some use, condition is good, with just a couple of dings in the silver rim. The bakelite is in good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cheroot holder is 6.2cm / 2.4ins long and the opening is 1.6cm / 0.63ins in diameter. It weighs 9.1g / 0.32oz.
The hallmarks on the silver rim are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1915 and the C F makers' mark for C.F. Silversmiths.
