George V Silver Bonbon Dish, Henry Matthews, 1922
Here we have a good quality George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The circular dish stands on three scroll feet with a pierced band of heart shapes around the upper part of the bowl and a scalloped rim with line decoration.
Originally intended for wrapped sweets, it would work equally well for nuts or snacks, as a antique jewellery or trinket dish or for small items on a desk.
The bonbon dish is made in Birmingham by well known silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1921. Matthews started his business in the early 1890s and produced a wide range of items into the early 1930s.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the pierced band plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 12.3cm / 4.8ins in diameter and stands 2.4cm / 0.9ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 61.5g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks in the centre of the underside are clear to read although they've had two attempts at stamping the H for Henry. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter x for 1922 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed forv Parcel Post.
