George V Silver Capstan Inkwell, Boots, 1918

This is a charming small George V Sterling Silver Inkwell. The circular inkwell is in the capstan style with a broad spreading base, weighted for stability, and a hinged lid. The liner is set into the inkwell. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The inkwell was made in Birmingham by the Boots Pure Drug Co and dates to 1918, the end of World War One. Founded in Nottingham by John Boot in 1849, Boots The Chemist is now one of the UK's largest and most successful retailers. Between around 1900 and 1925, Boots produced and stocked a wide range of good quality household & personal silverware, primarily, though not exclusively, aimed at female customers. These attractive items have now become popular with collectors.
The inkwell has definitely seen some use but condition is fair with just a few little knocks. The hinge on the lid is in good working order and the inkwell remains perfectly usable today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The base is 6.9cm / 2.7ins in diameter and the inkwell stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs in at 90.8g / 3.2oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are quite rubbed after many years of polishing but can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t for 1918 and the B P D C in a shield makers' mark for the Boots Pure Drug Co. There is a secondary partial set in the lid showing the lion passant and the 1918 date letter.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
