George V Silver Condiment Set, Wm. Drummond, 1928

Here we have a fine quality cased George V Sterling Silver Condiment Set. The condiment set consists of a circular open salt with blue glass liner, a pear shaped pepper shaker and a drum style mustard pot with blue glass liner together with Old English pattern salt and mustard spoons. The box is covered with thin gold tooled black leather and has an ivory satin lining in the lid with the pieces set into a cream velvet tray.
The set was retailed by William Drummond & Co of Melbourne, Australia and dates to 1928. The three condiment pieces have sponsors' marks for William Drummond & Co and are assayed in London, whilst the salt and mustard spoons have the makers' mark for Adie Brothers and were assayed in Birmingham. It is likely that the whole set was made by Adie Brothers to order from William Drummond & Co as they were retailers and didn't manufacture in England, although they did in Australia.
William Drummond arrived in Australia from Scotland in the mid-19th century and eventually settled in Melbourne. He founded his retail business with partner Samuel Brush in 1872, becoming William Drummond & Co after Brush’s death in 1878. Drummond was a retail goldsmith, silversmith and jeweller and became one of Melbourne’s most prestigious retail outlets supplying goods imported from renowned makers in the UK and the USA and also employing highly skilled local artisans to produce bespoke pieces including a famous ruby and diamond brooch for Queen Elizabeth II. The company ceased trading in the 1960s.
Condition is extremely good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liners. The box is also in good condition with both the hinges and clasps in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2cm / 0.79ins high, with the salt spoon being 5.8cm / 2.3ins long. The pepper shaker is 3.2cm / 1.2ins in diameter and 7.5cm / 2.9ins high. The mustard pot is 6cm / 2.4ins from rim to handle, 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter and 4.7cm / 1.8ins high with the mustard spoon being 5.9cm / 2.3ins long. Without the blue glass liners, the set weighs in at 72.3g / 2.5oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together in their box the set weighs 412g / 14.5oz.
The hallmarks on the various pieces are all nice and clear to read. The show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter n for 1928 and the W.D & Co sponsors' mark for William Drummond & Co. The spoons have the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letters D for 1928 or C for 1927 and the distinctive A Bros Ltd makers' mark for Adie Brpothers Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the condiment set.
