George V Silver Hip Flask, Deakin & Francis, 1921
Here we have an interesting George V Sterling Silver Hip Flask. The hip flask is oval with a concave back to fit comfortably into a pocket and has a bayonet fitting cap. Around the side there is a long inscription reading: BOMBAY HUNT CROSS COUNTRY RACE 1941 - KIRKE-SMITH TROPHY - J.S.R. SPELMAN ON ABERDEEN.
The hip flask was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Deakin & Francis and dates to 1921. With WW2 raging in 1941 an older item was necessarily used as the trophy for that year's event. Clearly the British Raj was not going to let a World War interrupt their annual cross country race.
As with many hip flasks this one has definitely seen some use, possibly even seen some military action, and there are a couple of bruises on the lower part of the flask but it remains in usable condition and continues to tell its story. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The flask is 11cm / 4.3ins high, 6.5cm / 2.5ins across and 2.2cm / 0.87ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 94.2g / 3.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the neck and the body, are quite rubbed from long years of polishing but can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the almost invisible anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter w for 1921 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis.
