George V Silver Pedestal Bowl, Elkington & Co 1919

Here we have an elegant George V Sterling Silver Pedestal Bowl with whiplash handles. The bowl has a circular base with a gadrooned rim and thumb mark decoration. The knopped stem rises to an eight panelled bowl with a sinuous pierced gallery of floral decoration around the upper part and a gadrooned top rim.
The bowl was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and dates to 1919. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced gallery and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 17.8cm / 7ins from handle to handle, 13.3cm / 5.2ins across the top rim and stands 12cm / 4.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 191.6g / 6.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
