George V Silver Pepper Grinder, Sheffield, 1920

Here we have a good quality George V Sterling Silver and Cut Glass Pepper Grinder. The grinder is shaped like a thistle with the diamond cut spherical glass body forming the base of the thistle and the silver hood around the grinder forming the upper part of the thistle. The grinder has a screw on finial which opens the lid for refilling with peppercorns.
The pepper grinder was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1920. The mechanism was made in France by Peugeot Freres, generally regarded as the makers of the very best grinders.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 105 years of use. The grinder mechanism is in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The grinder is 9.8cm / 3.8ins high and 5.5cm / 2.1ins in diameter across the base. It weighs 188.3g / 6.64oz.
The hallmarks, around the rim of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter c for 1920 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. There are partial sets on the collar, the mechanism clip and the lid.
