George V Silver Tea Infuser, Birmingham, 1911
This is a smart George V Sterling Silver Tea Infuser Spoon. The infuser has a handle in the Old English pattern and an egg shaped infuser with a gilt interior. This is in two parts, with one attached to the handle and the other sliding on and off. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The infuser was made in Birmingham by Hammond, Turner & Sons and dates to 1911. The firm was established in 1717 and originally just known as Hammond. They originally specialised in buttons, particularly in sporting and hunting designs. They became Hammond, Turner and Dickinson in 1790 and Hammond, Turner & Sons in 1823. As well as buttons they produced tea strainers and infusers, cigarette cases, matchbox holders, dress studs and napkin rings and clips. They remained in business until the mid-1950s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The infuser is 13cm / 5.1ins long and 3.4cm / 1.3ins across the egg shaped bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 35.9g / 1.27oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1911 and the H T & S makers' mark for Hammond, Turner & Sons.
