George V Silver Tobacco Box, Sanders & Co, 1912

Here we have a handsome George V Sterling Silver Tobacco Box with a Gilt interior. The box is oblong with rounded corners. It has a hinged lid which opens to reveal a compartment on the underside with an elasticated band for holding rolling papers or pipe accessories. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tobacco box was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Sanders & Co and dates to 1912. Sanders & Co was established in London around 1910 and registered marks at the London, Birmingham and Chester assay offices. They were a retailer and manufacturer who specialised in items for wealthy gentlemen with manufacturing in Brixton and a shop in Kensington. They ceased trading in the late 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tobacco box measures 8.5cm / 3.3ins by 6cm / 2.4ins and is 1.5cm / 0.59ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 85.1g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, in the tobacco compartment, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the S & Co makers' mark for Sanders & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tobacco box.
