George VI Silver Hand Of Cards Teaspoon, 1940
This is an unusal George VI Sterling Silver Teaspoon from the early years of World War Two. The stem of the spoon is styled as a Corinthian pillar and the finial is a hand holding a fan of six playing cards. This may have been produced for a casino or gentlemen's club, possibly been a prize in a Bridge / Whist competition or ordered by an individual.
The teaspoon was made in Birmingham by John Taylor & Co and dates to 1940. John Taylor & Co was founded in London by brothers John and William Taylor in 1922. They may be descendants of London silversmith John Taylor, who was active in the late 19th century. The firm’s showroom was in Charterhouse Street with manufacturing primarily in Birmingham. They styled themselves as silversmiths and medal makers and remained in business into the mid 1960s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 11.5cm / 4.5ins long and weighs in at a respectable 15.0g / 0.53oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the bowl, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Q for 1940 and the J.T & Co makers' mark for John Taylor & Co.
