George VI Silver Rat Tail Teaspoon, Sheffield 1938

Here we have a good quality George VI Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the Hanoverian "Rat Tail" pattern. This style originally dates to the mid-18th century but was revived and became popular during the interwar years. Hanoverian spoons were designed to be laid on the table with the bowl facing down, so consequently the end of the stem turns up rather than down and this enables the long "rat tail" to be seen running along the back of the bowl.
This teaspoon has done some travelling. It was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Cooper Brothers & Sons in 1938 but also bears the import marks for Dublin, Ireland in 1938. Presumably it was ordered from Cooper Brothers by an Irish retailer, sold in Ireland and then at some point brought back by the owner to England. It is unusual to see these double Sterling hallmarks and makes the spoon of interest to collectors.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 80 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 10.7cm / 4.25" long and weighs a respectable 11.3g / 0.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
Both sets of hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. The English set show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "v" for 1938 and the CB & S makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons. The Irish set have the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the Dublin import mark and the date letter "W" for 1938.
