George VI Sterling Silver Inkwell, Harrods, 1937

Here we have a very fine quality George VI Sterling Silver Inkwell with a Clear Glass Liner. The inkwell is of capstan form with the circular base weighted for stability and covered on the underside with black leather to avoid scratching. There are notches to the front and back of the base for resting two dip pens and a circular hinged lid which opens to reveal the glass liner. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The inkwell was made in London by Harrods Ltd and dates to 1937. The mark for Harrods is RWB for Sir Richard Woodman Burbidge who was chairman of Harrods, succeeding his father in 1917 and up until his death in 1945. Harrods' silver workshops were at this time located in Trevor Square, across the road from the main Harrods store, and there was also a small silverware showroom there. The Harrods name was always a guarantee of good quality pieces.
Overall condition is very good, with just two small dings in the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 11.5cm / 4.5ins in diameter across the base and stands 4cm / 1.6ins high. It weighs in at 328.8g / 11.6oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are slightly rubbed but still nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1937 and the distinctive R W B makers' mark for Sir Richard Woodman Burbidge of Harrods Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
