Japanese bronze of a seated scholar, Meiji period


A beautifully modelled bronze okimono of a scholar seated on the ground by his writing table, Japanese late 19th to early 20th century.
The bearded figure in hat and patterned robes is turned to his left with right elbow resting on the table and left hand on his knee. His right hand holds a pen suggesting a moment of contemplation before putting pen to paper. The figure sits next to a low cloth covered table with all the equipment needed for a scholar set out neatly on top, including scrolls, a book and pen box. A statue of a deity representing wisdom also stands on the table.
Measurements:
Height 17 cm
Width 15 cm
Depth 13 cm
Weight: 2.53kg
Condition: The bronze is in excellent condition without breaks or bruises. It comes apart in three sections with holes in the base to locate the figure and table.
