Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Koro / Incense Burner

Here we have a Japanese Bronze Koro or Incense Burner from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The bowl of the koro stands on three legs with looped handles decorated with cherry blossoms. The pierced lid is formed in the shape of cherry blossoms on branches.
Incense burning is a very important part of Japanese culture and the appreciation of incense, called Kodo, is one of the three Arts of Refinement alongside flower arranging, Kado, and the tea ceremony, Chado. A small koro such as this one would often be burning during a tea ceremony.
The Meiji period, named after Emperor Meiji, saw huge changes in Japanese society as it moved from isolation to embracing a more global role, the introduction of new technologies, constitutional changes and a new drive to bring Japanese art and artefacts to a worldwide audience.
The koro has undoubtedly seen some use, as you would expect, and the bronze has developed a rich patina. It is in very good overall condition and suitable either to be in continued use, kept as a decorative item or to be added to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The incense burner measures 11cm / 4.3ins from handle to handle, 8.7cm / 3.4ins across the body and stands 11cm / 4.3ins high. It weighs 376.2g / 13.3oz.
There are no identifying marks on the Koro.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the koro.
