Large Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Exeter, 1848

Here we have a delightful early Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The cream jug is pear shaped and stands on three pad feet. The body is embossed with a rural scene including a dairy maid, all surrounding a blank cartouche. There is a broad pouring lip, a scalloped top rim and a scroll handle.
The cream jug was made by Robert Williams & Sons and assayed in Exeter in 1848. Robert Williams of Bristol took over the business of William Woodman after his retirement in the 1830s. He became the founding father of the firm that would pass through several generations of his descendants and become Josiah Williams & Co, the most successful British silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield, which remained in business up until the start of the Second World War.
Condition is very good, with just a few tiny dings and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 175 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 10.5cm / 4.1ins from lip to handle, 7.2cm / 2.8ins across the body and 12.8cm / 5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 113.1g / 3.99oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the Gothic date letter M for 1848, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R W over J W over J W makers' mark for Robert Williams & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
