Mappin & Webb Silver Bonbon Dish, Chester, 1906
Mappin & Webb is always a mark of quality and they were arguably at their height in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. This Edwardian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish is made to a very high standard with a pierced pedestal base and sides broadening out to a wide beaded rim. Unusually for a piece by Mappin & Webb, who were based in Sheffield and London, this Bonbon dish is assayed in Chester, which adds an extra element of collectability.
The Bonbon dish is in very good condition with no dings, dents or splits and just a very slight flattening on one side of the round pedestal base. It would look beautiful filled with something sweet and delicious such as champagne truffles or fresh strawberries. Alternatively it is a beautiful decorative item or a lovely addition to a collection.
The Bonbon Dish is 12.5cm in diameter across the top rim, 6.5cm in diameter across the base and 5.8cm high. It weighs a respectable 73.3g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the rim are well struck and clear to read, consisting of the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter "F" for 1906 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition there is the Mappin & Webb Ltd retailer stamp.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
