Mid-Century Silver Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl, 1950
This is an elegant Mid-Century George VI Sterling Silver Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl set. Both pieces are in a retro-Georgian style and stand on three legs with lined rims and a scroll handle on the cream jug. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set is made in Birmingham by well known silversmiths Adie Brothers Ltd and dates to 1950. Adie Brothers started around 1920 and remained in business up until the mid-1960s.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the base of the sugar bowl and a shallow dent in the base of the cream jug plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 70 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 10.1cm / 4ins from lip to handle, 5.7cm / 2.2ins across the top rim and 8cm / 3.1ins high. The sugar bowl is 9.1cm / 3.6ins across the top rim and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high. The pair together weigh a substantial 123g / 4.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the sides of each item are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1950 and the distinctive oval A Bros Ltd makers' mark for Adie Brothers Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
