Pair of Bowlers Silver Teaspoons, 1933 Bowls Teaspoons
This is a fun pair of good quality George V Sterling Silver Teaspoons with the figure of a bowler engraved at the top of each stem. The spoons were made in Bristol by the famous West Country silversmiths Josiah Williams & Co in a good gauge of silver and date to 1933. Josiah Williams & Co can date their history back to a Bristol silversmith called William Woodman in 1818 with the Williams family taking control of the company around 1832. By the late 1800s they were the largest manufacturing silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham & Sheffield. Because there was no assay office in Bristol, the company sent its products to first Exeter and later London to be assayed.

As they are solid silver and date to the 1930s, the spoons would've almost certainly been made for a lawn bowls club, or for a very keen individual player. Indoor tenpin bowling didn't arrive in the UK in any significant way until the 1960s. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind on the teaspoons. The hallmarks, on the back of the stems, are well struck and clear to read, with the exception of the makers' marks which are somewhat rubbed but still decipherable.

The pair of teaspoons are in very good overall condition with no dings or dents and only the minimal wear you would expect. They would make a great gift for a keen bowler, indoor or outdoor, or would make a nice addition to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photos.

The spoons are each 10.7cm long and the pair weighs in at a very respectable 24.1g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the gothic letter "s" for 1933 and the JW & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
