Pair of Edwardian Silver Knife Rests, Wm. Hutton

Here we have an unusual Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Knife Rests. The rests have a horizontal bar with the ends being made of four graduated balls. They could either be used for a carving knife and fork or a regular knife and fork would fit on each one.
The knife rests were made by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons, with one being assayed in Sheffield in 1903 and one in London in 1905. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny flat spots on the top balls of the London rest plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each knife rest is 8.5cm / 3.3ins long, 3cm / 1.2ins wide and 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 88.3g / 3.11oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the tops of the bars, are clear to read. They both show the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. One has the crown assay mark for Sheffield and the date letter l for 1903 whilst the other has the leopard's head assay mark for London and the date letter k for 1905.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the knife rests.
