Pair of Edwardian Silver Pillar Candlesticks, 1908

This is a handsome Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Pillar Candlesticks. The sticks have stepped circular bases, weighted for stability, upright column stems and circular spreading sconces. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by Ellis & Co and date to 1908. The firm was founded by Ellis Jacob Greenberg in 1906. He was the son of highly regarded silversmith Israel Sigmund Greenberg. The company were both electroplaters and silversmiths and produced a broad range of good quality silverware. In the 1960s they merged with Barker Brothers to become the Barker Ellis Silver Company.
The candlesticks have certainly seen some use and there are signs of a repair where the sconce joins the pillar stem and a small split on the top rim on one of them but they remain perfectly usable and still look attractive. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 10.8cm / 4.25ins high and 7.4cm / 2.9ins in diameter. The pair together weigh in at 283.2g / 9.99oz but this obviously includes the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the side rims of the bases, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the E.J.G makers' mark for Ellis Jacob Greenberg of Ellis & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
