Pair of George V Silver Salts, Chester, 1917

This is a good looking pair of George V Sterling Silver Open Salts with their original blue glass liners dating from the time of the First World War. The salts have a scalloped rim, a central raised band and stand on three feet.
The open salts are made by J & R Griffin Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1917. Joseph & Richard Griffin were actually based in Birmingham\'s famous Jewellery Quarter but had the vast bulk of their output assayed in the less busy office in Chester rather than their local office in Birmingham. Founded in 1895, the firm was in business up until 1926.
Overall condition is good, however there is a small amount of salt corrosion to the silver beneath the blue glass liners, where sadly people often forget to clean their salts. One salt has two small dings on the central raised band. Both blue glass liners have small chips in them but these don\'t affect their use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salts are 4.9cm / 1.9ins in diameter across the top and 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together, without their blue glass liners, weigh in at a respectable 32.2g / 1.13oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the sides of the salts are clear to read, although the makers\' marks are just a little rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter R for 1917 and the J & R G makers\' mark for J & R Griffin Ltd.
