Pair of Victorian Silver Salts, Robert Harper 1863

This is a good quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts. The salts are cauldron shaped with beaded rims and stand on three claw & ball feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salts are made in London by silversmith Robert Harper and date to 1863. Robert Harper registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in February 1853. He made quite a range of silverware in his Clerkenwell workshop from small items such as these salts, up to full tea services and large goblets and tankards. He remained in business until at least the mid-1880s.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings, virtually no salt corrosion and just the minimal superficial wear that has to be expected with the passage of time. These have clearly been well looked after for nearly 160 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salts are each 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter and stand 2.7cm / 1.1ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 63.5g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the undersides of the bases are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1863, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R H in conjoined circles makers' mark for Robert Harper.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
