Pair Victorian Exeter Silver Dinner Forks, 1866 Victorian Exeter Dinner Forks %%alt5%%
This is a top quality heavyweight pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Dinner Forks in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The forks are made by renowned silversmiths James & Josiah Williams and assayed in Exeter in 1866. James & Josiah Williams were the forerunners of Josiah Williams & Co, a hugely successful company based in Bristol which had been founded around 1818 and remained in business up until 1940. They are particularly well known for their superior quality flatware and cutlery.

The dinner forks are assayed in Exeter, the prinicipal assay office for South West England until its closure in 1882. Exeter silver is much rarer than pieces from London, Birmingham and Sheffield and greatly sought after by collectors.

These forks are very well made in a good gauge of silver. They are in the traditional fiddle pattern and, unusually for this period of time, have the initial "D" elegantly engraved on the underside of the stem. This was standard practice up until the 1770s but thereafter initials were usually on the top side of the stem.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear you would expect after over 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The forks are each 20.1cm / 7.9" long and the pair together weigh in at a very substantial 143.5g / 5.06oz.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter "K" for 1866, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW & JW makers' mark for James & Josiah Williams.
