Pair Victorian Scottish Silver Toddy Ladles, 1851

This is a lovely matched pair of early Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Toddy Ladles in the classic Fiddle pattern. The ladles are made in Edinburgh by specialist spoon maker Charles Robb and date to 1851.
Charles Robb began as a silversmith in Edinburgh around 1815. He specialised in spoon making and supplied many top Edinburgh retailers of the period. In the late 1850s the company was renamed Charles Robb & Sons.
These two toddy ladles are well made in a good gauge of silver and are in very good condition with no dings or dents and only the minimal surface wear you would expect after nearly 170 years. Both ladles have a letter "M" elegantly engraved at the top of the stem. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladles are each 13.6cm long and the pair together weigh a very respectable 61.2g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems are well struck and very clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark, which is a little rubbed but still readable. The hallmarks are the thistle for Scottish Sterling Silver, the three towered castle assay mark for Edinburgh, the gothic date letter "U" for 1851, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the CR makers' mark for Charles Robb.
