History

Kings Pattern was first introduced in England during the early nineteenth century and was based on an eighteenth century French design.

Thomas Watson employed Sewell as an apprentice in 1818 and following Watson's demise, Sewell bought Watson's business.Thomas Sewell registered his mark on the 20th January 1846 and was one of Newcastle's leading silversmiths at the time. Sewell was the warden of the Newcastle company of Goldsmiths on 15 occasion and attended every meeting a dedicated warden indeed! Sewell produced silver flatware of beautiful quality and died in 1883 aged 80 years old.

Condition report:In overall excellent condition for there age (144 years) with nice sharp edge to the bowls, the main kings pattern decoration only shows very light wear, however the shells to the bowls are faint (possibly down to a casting issue) the tongs show general age related wear with the occasional mark, light surface scratches and a slightly deeper nip to the bowl which is only visible upon close inspection , overall a superb pair of Victorian sugar tongs.
