Silver Asparagus Tongs, Mappin & Webb, 1930
This is a top quality pair of George V Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs in the classic Old English pattern. They have pierced broad blades for serving and a central ring to keep the two arms from overstretching. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The Asparagus Tongs are made in Sheffield by Mappin & Webb and date to 1930. With a history stretching back to 1810, Mappin & Webb are probably the most famous of all English silversmiths and are the current Crown Jewellers.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 90 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 21cm / 8.3ins long with the blades being 2.4cm / 0.9ins wide. They weigh in at a very substantial 130.8g / 4.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of one of the arms are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter n for 1930 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition, the holding ring is also stamped with the lion passant for Sterling Silver.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Deivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the tongs.
