Silver Handled Manicure Set, Green & Cadbury, 1920

This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Handled Five Piece Manicure Set. The set consists of a nail buffer, a nail file, a pair of tweezers, a nail cleaner and a cuticle pusher. The buffer has a silver handle above a chamois buffer whilst the other tools have silver handles and steel uppers. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The manicure set is made in Birmingham by the Green & Cadbury Ltd and and dates to 1919 for the buffer and 1920 for the tools. The firm was founded by Edwin Green around 1858 who was soon joined in partnership by Joel Cadbury, a cousin of the famous chocolate making family. Their principal business was making luxury buttons but they also produced what were termed silver fancy goods, particularly prayer book covers, photo frames, button hooks, vanity and manicure sets, purses and cigar and cigarette cases. They ceased trading in the mid-1930s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents in the silver, a good high polish on the steel sections and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The items remain perfectly usable today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tools are 11.6cm / 4.5ins long whilst the buffer is 9.7cm / 3.8ins long, 2.7cm / 1.1ins across and 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. The set weighs in at 83.5g / 2.9oz.
The hallmarks on the pieces are nice and clear, with the exception of the makers' mark which is quite rubbed on the tools but easy to read on the buffer. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 or v for 1920 and the G & C Ld makers' mark for Green & Cadbury Ltd.
