Silver Pepper Shaker, Mappin & Webb, 1922
This is a stylish, good quality George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. Standing on three feet, the body is a tapered cylinder with a rounded bottom and flared, scalloped rim. The pierced lid is bell shaped with an acorn style finial.
The pepper shaker is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1922. Although primarily based in Sheffield, Mappin & Webb also manufactured in Birmingham and London.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect in an item that has seen 100 years of good service. There is some salt marking on the inside of the shaker but this doesn't effect the look or function. The lid fits snugly and you can shake pepper onto your food with confidence! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high and is 4.2cm / 1.6ins in diameter across the rim. It weighs in at a very respectable 51g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the front of the body are quite rubbed but can still just about be read. There is a secondary partial set on the rim of the lid that are crisp and clear. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter x for 1922 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. The secondary set shows the lion passant and the date letter x.
