Sugar Caster with Silver Lid, Charles Boyton, 1916

This is a good quality George V slice cut glass sugar caster with a hallmarked Sterling Silver star cut top. The caster is hallmarked for renowned silversmiths Charles Boyton & Son and was assayed in Birmingham, 1916. There were four generations of Charles Boytons working in London from 1825 to 1948, although they lost control of the family firm in 1933. They all have a reputation for high quality silver.
The glass sugar caster is slightly conical in shape, with slice cut sides and a threaded neck which the star cut Sterling Silver top screws onto. Our ancestors were much more liberal in adding sugar than we are today and this caster would have been used to sprinkle a little sweetness on to any sort of desert. Today it would work well filled with cocoa powder for sprinkling onto a cappucino or hot chocolate.
Condition is extremely good. The glass has no chips, cracks, rough edges or discolouration. The silver top has a couple of very tiny dings in it but these don't detract from either its beauty or its function. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The caster stands 11.6cm / 4.5" high and is 5cm / 2" in diameter across the base.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are clear to read. They show the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "r" for 1916 and the CB & S makers' mark for Charles Boyton & Son.
