Victorian Cut Glass & Silver Claret Jug, 1895

Here we have a handsome late Victorian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Claret Jug. The glass body has a circular star cut base with geometric decoration around the body and thumb lines down the neck. The ornate collar and lid are decorated with scrolls and flowers whilst the pouring lip features a mask of Bacchus, the god of wine. The curving handle is plain.
The claret jug was made in Sheffield and dates to 1895. Sadly there is only a ghost of the makers' mark left and we are unable to say who made it but they were clearly very accomplished silversmiths.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 130 years of good service. The hinge on the lid is in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The claret jug stands 25cm / 9.8ins high, is 12cm / 4.7ins from lip to handle and 8.6cm / 3.4ins across the body. It weighs in at 717g / 25.3oz.
The hallmarks, high on the collar near the handle, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read apart from the makers' mark which has been polished away by many years of cleaning. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield and the date letter c for 1895.
Shipping in the UK is £18.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the claret jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
