Victorian Gothic Match Holder, G.H. James, 1893

Here we have a distinctive Victorian Gothic Sterling Silver Mounted Glass Match Holder. The smoked glass match holder is spherical in form with a flattened base and a Gothic style silver rim around the central opening for the matches. Unlike most of these match holders, the body is smooth, not ribbed, so a thumbnail part of the base has been cut away and ridged to strike the matches. This is a very unusual match holder and would make a great addition to any collection or be perfectly usable for holding matches or cocktail sticks today.
The match holder is made in London by silversmiths G.H. James & Co and dates to 1893. George Henry James began in partnership with his brother Josiah James in 1868 but took over as sole proprietor in 1880. Operating from premises in the City of London, the firm specialised in personal items for the discerning city gentleman, many of them smoking related. They ceased trading in the late 1930s.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of tiny dings in the Sterling Silver rim. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The match holder is 5.5cm / 2.2ins in diameter and stands 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs 223.3g / 7.9oz.
The hallmarks, on two of the prongs of the silver rim, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1893 and the G.H.J makers' mark for G.H. James & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the match holder.
