Victorian Scottish Silver Server, R. Gray, 1844

Here we have a rare, very good quality Early Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Server. This is an unusual shaped serving spoon with a rim around the bowl and a totally flat base. The server is in the King's shape but is double struck with an acanthus leaf design below a circular cartouche with a foliate edging. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The server was made in Glasgow by the highly regarded silversmiths Robert Gray & Son and dates to 1844. Robert Gray established his firm in Glasgow in 1776. He was a specialist spoon and flatware maker. In 1802 the firm became Robert Gray & Son, took premises in Trongate in Glasgow and started to broaden the range of silverware that they produced. They remained in business into the 1850s with items assayed in both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The server is a well made piece in a good heavy gauge of silver. It is 23cm / 9ins long, 5.4cm / 2.1ins across the bowl and weighs in at a substantial 96.3g / 3.39oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are somewhat rubbed but still legible. They show the lion rampant for Scottish Sterling Silver, the tree, fish and bell assay mark for Glasgow, the date letter Z for 1844, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R G & S makers' mark for Robert Gray & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the server.
