Victorian Silver & Gilt Mug, Henry Wilkinson, 1856

Here we have a superb quality early Victorian Sterling Silver Mug with a Gilt Interior. The mug has a classic pot belly shape on top of a circular tapered foot. The handle is acanthus leaf decorated at both ends and the body is engraved all around with an intricate scrolling design surrounding a blank cartouche on the front.
The mug was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Henry Wilkinson & Co and dates to 1856. Henry Wilkinson entered his first mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1831, although the family had been producing Old Sheffield Plate for a number of years prior to that. They made good quality silverware and electroplated items. The firm presented their wares at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and opened a London showroom in 1857. In 1892 the business was bought by Walker & Hall.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect from over 165 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug is 9cm / 3.5ins from rim to handle, 6.7cm / 2.6ins in diameter and stands 11.5cm / 4.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 136.0g / 4.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the rim and next to the handle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter N for 1856, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H W & Co makers' mark for Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
